Now that Connor is out of the crib I didn’t want that $100 crib mattress just collecting dust so I found myself inspired by Pinterest yet again!

Aaahhhh… how I love you, Pinterest…

Crib mattress re purposed into a reading nook! I love how the Pinterest version is lifted up and includes storage but I wasn’t quite ready for that yet because I wanted Connor to be able to actually get on and off of it easily so for now ours (below) is on the floor.  I threw it together with couch pillows we don’t use anymore, a few books & teddy.  Of course I had to include blankie as well.  Connor has a downstairs blankie & an upstairs blankie so we can always have one around! The kid loves his blankie….

I love the idea of re purposing the mattress and am excited for the future of this little nook.  It will be great when it can be multi functional and practical for both kids and adults in more of a daybed style nook.

  1. Maybe I missed it, did you get a twin mattress for his room instead now? We're in the process of converting our daughter's room over to montessori style, so far the crib is the last to go (I'm so nervous!) just wondering if there's a reason you're using a new/different mattress?

  2. Looking back now I guess I never clarified how his room used to be set up (before we took the crib out)…

When we were co sleeping together we used to just sleep in the guest room bed but in December we bought a new master bed so we had an extra mattress floating around that wasn't really old enough to get rid of yet so we decided to put it in Connor's room. So he had both his crib AND a double mattress on the floor. So we'd co sleep there some nights and some nights he'd sleep in his crib (and for his daytime naps) So that's the only reason why I'm using a regular mattress versus his crib mattress. If we hadn't of had that extra I would have just used his crib mattress. Though I do like the fact that he has a little more room to roll around in his sleep (which he does A LOT of)

I've known quite a few people who have moved their kids out of their crib in the past week and all of them said it has worked out GREAT so far! I'm sure your daughter will do just as well. Has she tried sleeping out of the crib yet?

If not & you're not ready to take the crib apart completely, keep it up and just pull out the mattress and put it on the floor and see how it goes. That way if she's just not transitioning easily you can toss the mattress back in and try again later. OR if you have a pack n play use that for back up if you want to move toward getting the crib out of the room.

    Good luck!! Keep me posted!

  3. Another question for you … does your son try to sneak out of the room at all during the night? I'm thinking my little girl might try to escape, is there a way to remedy this or am I just overestimating her abilities lol? :)

  4. He doesn't. He rarely fully wakes up during the night but when he wakes up in the morning he either starts playing or sits by the door and whines for us to come get him. :)

If your NOT overestimating her abilities and she does succeed in opening the door and coming out, my guess is she'll come straight to your room. How is your house set up? Are you able to shut all other doors, keep yours open some and gate the top of that stairs if you have them in that area?

That is what I plan on doing when he eventually figures out how to open the door. If it happens in the middle of the night he'll either climb in bed with us or I'll go snuggle up with him in his bed.

Any help? Play it by ear. Last night after I put Connor down I heard him play a minute and then it was quiet. Went to check on him before I went to bed and he was sound asleep, blankie in hand in the middle of the floor. :) It seems to all work out one way or the other.
